What kind of glass do I need for my railing project?

Typical 12mm Tempered glazing is specified for guard rail projects. However thicker Laminated glazing is often specified for commercial projects.

Do I need Engineering for my railing project?

If your project is permitted, then you will need Engineering Schedules to go with the project. Speak with your Inspector on what they will require for your project as it can vary by municipality and inspector. Regardless if you require engineering or not, Island Glass will design and install your system to the same standard that our Engineers would require as guard rails are no place to cut corners.

Do I required Top Cap on my railing glass?

Yes, a structural top cap is required on railing glass installations per BC Building code, unless there is a handrail system in place that can also act as a secondary guard to falling.

But what if my neighbor doesn’t have a Top Cap?

If there is no handrail present that means that they removed the Top Cap after installation or the installation wasn’t to code in the first place. Island Glass will not install a system that is incomplete.
